Update #49 - 4th December 2000 (5.00am AEDST)
Position - 56°00' S, 67°16' W

Let the record show that this magnificent boat,
Solo Globe Challenger ("Sal") and I passed to the south of Cape Horn at 3.25am AEDST (12.25pm local time) on Monday 4th December, 2000. Time taken since departure was 49 days 14 hours 25 minutes. We copped a belting yesterday, last night and early this morning with 40-50 knots from the WNW, coupled with some ordinary seas, rain and very poor visibility. I thought that our chances of even seeing the Horn were remote. However, as we neared land and got some protection, the breeze started to drop off, the rain cleared and the seas abated. The end result was that we were able to pass within 1 mile of this absolutely majestic piece of our planet. What a sight ..... snow capped peaks in the background. Thank you to all those who've helped get me here. I feel good!

Take care,

Tony Mowbray
